What is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)?
MRI is a sophisticated diagnostic imaging technique that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to examine parts of the body. MRI is safe and effective and does not use ionizing radiation like X-ray or CT. MRI most often is used to diagnose diseases of the brain, spine, skeleton, chest, abdomen, pelvis and blood vessels.
With our open-design MRI, you lie on a comfortable table that gently glides into position from the side, not head first, and you are not confined to a narrow tunnel.
Is an MRI like an X-ray?
No. An MRI uses a powerful magnet in conjunction with radio frequency waves to generate images of your internal organs and structures without radiation.
What can I expect during my exam?
MRI is an easy, comfortable and painless procedure that is completed within 30 to 60 minutes. During the exam you will be asked to lie on a cushioned table, and a device called a "coil" will be placed over or under you on the area being examined.
When you are comfortably situated on the table, the magnet will move into place. During the exam you will be asked to lie as still as possible while the
magnet takes pictures of your body. When the magnet is taking pictures you will hear several thumping noises. Throughout the exam, the technologist will be in constant communication with you, and you may ask questions at any time.
Do I have to hold still the whole time?
It is important for image clarity and the best scan results to hold still during the exam. The technologists will instruct you as to when you may move between scans. Keep in mind a routine exam may take at least 20 minutes.
Does the machine make a lot of noise?
The magnet makes a slight rapping sound as images are being taken. In between scans the machine is quiet. If you desire, head phones might be available to you for your exam and their use will not prevent you from hearing the technologist if he or she speaks to you during the exam.
Will I be alone?
You will be in contact with a technologist at all times. Even when he or she is not in the MRI room, you will be able to talk to him or her by intercom. In some cases, a family member is welcome to stay in the room with you during your scan.
Do I need to prepare for the exam?
No special preparation is needed for the exam. You may eat and drink normally and take any prescribed medication, unless you are instructed differently by your physician. You may want to avoid caffeinated beverages so you are able to lie still for a long period.
Also, you will be asked to remove any metallic objects or jewelry such as eye makeup, a watch, eyeglasses, credit cards, dentures, or hearing aides. The objects can affect the quality of the images. You will be provided with a secure place to put these items.
Please tell us if you have:
• Cardiac pacemaker or artificial heart valve
• Metal plate, pin or other metallic implant
• Intrauterine device, such as a Copper-7 IU
• Insulin pump or other infusion pump
• Previous gun shot wound
• Ever been a metal worker or had metal in your eye
• Permanent (tattoo) eye-liner
• Also, be sure to tell us if you are pregnant.
How will I get my test results?
When your exam is complete, you may return to work or other normal activity. The board-certified radiologists of Professional Radiology, Inc. will read your exam, and the results will be reported to your referring physician within 48 hours.
